This book comprises papers presented by eminent scholars during the National Seminar on Culture and Development to motivate Member Countries of Asia Pacific Region to evolve measures for the integration of aesthetic and cultural values in the planning of policies in all areas of development and preparation of Plans of Action. The focus is on the role of culture in strengthening developmental programmes. There is a vital need for the administrators at all levels to recognise the cultural and aesthetic values, religious beliefs and social customs of the Indian people before imposing any “Models” of development. In this book the author has highlighted the significant features of Teeratharaj Prayag – the foremost cultural and religious centre. Prayag is a repository of creative human vibrations. One can see this city as the centre of spiritual and moral education. The description and reference of Prayag in Vedas, Puranas, Shrutis, Smritis, Mahabharata, Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas given in this book gives a wide view of the spiritual and cultural tradition.

Kumbh City Prayag

The Kumbh is a symbol of Herculean effort for exploration of human soul, heart and mind in quest of elements that enrich life. Prayag is not only an ancient city known to exist since Pre-Vedic period but also a historically significant city as evident from archaeological finds from time to time. This book gives a glimpse of the important centers of faith in and around Allahabad. It traces the genesis of Kumbh, its astrological significance, the temples as centers of sustaining faith and modern science technological institutions including the University of Allahabad.

भारत राष्ट्रीयता के साथ स्थानीय संस्कृतियों से संपन्न देश है। विभिन्न क्षेत्रों, नगरों की विशेषताएँ इस देश को महत्त्वपूर्ण बनाती हैं। ये मात्रा भौगोलिकता तक सीमित नहीं। इनमें रुचियों के विभिन्न पहलू देखे जा सकते हैं, जैसे वहाँ की वास्तुकला, धर्म, लोकगीत, वेशभूषा, भाषा, प्रकृति, पर्यावरण आदि। कई बार ये आपस में जुड़ते हैं तो कई बार सीमाओं का अतिक्रमण भी करते हैं। स्थानीयता के बावजूद उनमें ऐसे तत्त्व होते हैं जो भारतीयता के सहज आधार बनते हैं। यदि गाँव सांस्कृतिक एकरूपता के प्रतीक हैं तो शहर सांस्कृतिक विविधता के प्रतीक। ये एक तरह से हमारी ऐतिहासिक/सांस्कृतिक धरोहर हैं।

Forts of Karnataka

Karnataka has a long history of fort construction. No other region of India has forts as the region of Deccan which includes parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Satavahanas in the 3rd and 4th centuries C.E. are said to have built the earliest forts in Karnataka. Remnants of fort walls have been found in Sannati.

Living Traditions Tribal and Folk Paintings of India

Living traditions are an essential and a visible determinant of a country’s cultural identity. An Indian is conditioned both by participation and observation from a young age into many traditional art forms, figures and ritual drawings. CCRT is in the forefront to promote and disseminate knowledge about Indian Art and Culture. It is important for young people to grow up with an understanding of their own culture as that of others. The present book aims to create an awareness and appreciation about the rich living traditions of tribal and folk paintings of India. India has a myriad painting traditions of these some of the well known have been covered. To name a few, Chitrakathi of Maharashtra, Phad tradition of Rajasthan, Jadupatua tradition of Bengal and Bihar are based on narrative traditions as evident from the storyteller’s scrolls. Nathdwara painting of Rajasthan, Patachitras of Odisha, Kalighat of West Bengal and Mata-ni-pachedi of Gujarat are linked to a central deity and faith. These paintings are embedded with aesthetic, spiritual, ecological, social as well as recreational value. Each painting genre moulds itself into a similar format. Efforts have been made that for each genre its origin, necessary background information, theme, methods and material are covered.
